This bold and slightly spicy side or appetizer brings a perfect balance of citrus brightness and warm heat, making it a delicious complement to Middle Eastern meals or a standalone snack.
Ingredients
Scale
Potatoes
- 4 medium potatoes, peeled and cubed
Seasoning and Flavorings
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 tsp chili flakes (adjust to taste)
- 1 tsp paprika
- 2 tbsp chopped cilantro
- 2 tbsp lemon juice
- Salt, to taste
- Black pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Cook the potatoes: Boil the cubed potatoes in salted water for 5–7 minutes until slightly tender but still firm enough to hold their shape. Drain thoroughly to remove excess moisture.
- Crisp them up: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the boiled potatoes and fry for 10–12 minutes, turning occasionally to ensure even golden-brown crispiness on all sides.
- Add the flavor: Add the minced garlic, chili flakes, and paprika to the skillet. Cook while stirring for 1–2 minutes until the mixture becomes fragrant and the spices coat the potatoes evenly.
- Finish the dish: Stir in the chopped cilantro and lemon juice, seasoning with salt and black pepper to your preference. Mix well to combine all flavors thoroughly.
- Serve: Serve the Batata Harra hot as a side dish or as an appetizer alongside dishes like hummus, pita bread, grilled chicken, or falafel.
Notes
- Adjust chili flakes according to your desired spice level.
- Boiling potatoes until just tender prevents them from breaking apart during frying.
- Use fresh lemon juice for the best citrus flavor.
- Serve immediately for optimal crispiness, as the potatoes will soften if left standing.
- Can be made gluten-free and vegetarian by default.
