Banana Jam Ingredients
- 4 large ripe bananas
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup rum (or 1/4 cup orange juice for non-alcoholic version)
- 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
- 2 tablespoons lime juice
- 1/4 cup water
Instructions
- Prepare Bananas: Peel and roughly chop the bananas. Place them along with the water in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat to begin softening.
- Mash Bananas: As the bananas soften, mash them using a potato masher or wooden spoon. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the bananas start to break down into a softer consistency.
- Add Sugar and Lime: Stir in the sugar and lime juice. Continue stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar completely. Reduce the heat to medium-low to prepare for simmering.
- Simmer Jam: Simmer the mixture gently, stirring frequently, for about 10 to 15 minutes until the jam thickly coats a spoon indicating proper thickness.
- Finish and Cool: Remove from heat and stir in the freshly grated nutmeg and rum (or orange juice for a non-alcoholic version). Let the jam cool slightly before transferring it into a warm jar. Once cooled completely, chill the jam for best flavor and texture.
Notes
- The rum can be substituted with orange juice for a non-alcoholic version.
- Use very ripe bananas for the best natural sweetness and smooth texture.
- Store the jam in the refrigerator and consume within two weeks for freshness.
- The nutmeg should be freshly grated to maximize its fragrant flavor.
