Description

This French Caribbean–style banana jam is a silky, fragrant spread made from ripe bananas infused with bright lime juice, warm nutmeg, and a splash of rum. Perfect for spreading on toast or adding a tropical twist to desserts.

Ingredients

Scale

Banana Jam Ingredients

  • 4 large ripe bananas
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup rum (or 1/4 cup orange juice for non-alcoholic version)
  • 1 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
  • 2 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1/4 cup water

Instructions

  1. Prepare Bananas: Peel and roughly chop the bananas. Place them along with the water in a heavy-bottomed saucepan over medium heat to begin softening.
  2. Mash Bananas: As the bananas soften, mash them using a potato masher or wooden spoon. Cook for 5 to 7 minutes until the bananas start to break down into a softer consistency.
  3. Add Sugar and Lime: Stir in the sugar and lime juice. Continue stirring constantly to dissolve the sugar completely. Reduce the heat to medium-low to prepare for simmering.
  4. Simmer Jam: Simmer the mixture gently, stirring frequently, for about 10 to 15 minutes until the jam thickly coats a spoon indicating proper thickness.
  5. Finish and Cool: Remove from heat and stir in the freshly grated nutmeg and rum (or orange juice for a non-alcoholic version). Let the jam cool slightly before transferring it into a warm jar. Once cooled completely, chill the jam for best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • The rum can be substituted with orange juice for a non-alcoholic version.
  • Use very ripe bananas for the best natural sweetness and smooth texture.
  • Store the jam in the refrigerator and consume within two weeks for freshness.
  • The nutmeg should be freshly grated to maximize its fragrant flavor.
