Description

These Hot Chocolate Rice Krispie Treats combine the classic gooey texture of Rice Krispies with the rich flavor of hot chocolate and chocolate chips, creating a delightful, festive twist on a beloved snack. Sweet marshmallows, milk chocolate, and a sprinkle of holiday-themed toppings make this an irresistible treat perfect for parties or cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • ½ cup butter
  • ½ cup milk chocolate chips
  • ½ cup hot chocolate mix
  • 1 bag marshmallows (10 ounces, about 40 large marshmallows)
  • 6 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • â…“ cup mini marshmallows

Toppings (Optional)

  • Chocolate sprinkles
  • Mini marshmallows
  • Mini chocolate chips
  • Dehydrated marshmallows
  • Crushed candy canes

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Pan: Grease a 9″x13″ baking tray with cooking spray or line it with parchment paper for easy removal of the treats.
  2. Melt Butter: Place a large pot over low heat and melt the ½ cup of butter slowly to avoid burning.
  3. Add Chocolate Chips: Stir in the ½ cup milk chocolate chips into the melted butter until fully melted and smooth.
  4. Mix in Hot Chocolate: Add the ½ cup hot chocolate mix to the melted chocolate and butter, stirring until completely combined.
  5. Melt Marshmallows: Add the entire bag of marshmallows to the pot, stirring continuously until they have fully melted and the mixture is smooth and uniform.
  6. Combine with Cereal: Remove the pot from heat and add 6 cups of Rice Krispies cereal, gently folding with a spatula or wooden spoon to evenly coat the cereal in the marshmallow mixture. Spray spatula with cooking spray beforehand to prevent sticking.
  7. Add Mini Marshmallows: Carefully stir in â…“ cup mini marshmallows, allowing some to melt slightly while others retain shape for added texture.
  8. Spread Mixture: Transfer the mixture to the prepared pan and gently press it into an even layer without compressing it too much, maintaining a light, airy texture.
  9. Decorate: Sprinkle the top with your choice of mini marshmallows, chocolate sprinkles, mini chocolate chips, dehydrated marshmallows, or crushed candy canes. Press decorations gently to adhere.
  10. Cool and Slice: Let the treats cool at room temperature for about 30 minutes until set. Slice into 18 to 24 squares and serve.

Notes

  • Spraying your spatula lightly with cooking spray helps prevent the sticky marshmallow mixture from clinging.
  • Do not press down the mixture too firmly to keep the treats light and chewy rather than dense.
  • Feel free to customize toppings based on your preference or seasonal themes.
  • Store leftovers in an airtight container to keep treats fresh.
