Description

Delicious and crispy baked broccoli cheese balls made with finely chopped broccoli, cheddar and Parmesan cheese, and seasoned with garlic powder. These bite-sized snacks are perfect as appetizers or a healthy party treat.

Ingredients

Scale

Broccoli Cheese Balls

  • 2 cups broccoli florets, finely chopped
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/3 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Cooking spray or a drizzle of olive oil

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and lightly grease it using cooking spray or olive oil to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare the broccoli: Steam or blanch the broccoli florets for 2-3 minutes until tender but still bright green. Drain thoroughly and finely chop the broccoli to ensure the cheese balls hold together well.
  3. Mix ingredients: In a large mixing bowl, combine the chopped broccoli, breadcrumbs, shredded cheddar cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, egg, garlic powder, salt, and pepper. Mix thoroughly until the mixture is cohesive and can be formed into balls.
  4. Shape the balls: Scoop out tablespoon-sized portions of the mixture and roll them into smooth balls with your hands. Place each ball evenly spaced on the prepared baking sheet.
  5. Prepare for baking: Lightly spray or brush the tops of the broccoli cheese balls with cooking spray or drizzle with olive oil to help them brown and crisp during baking.
  6. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 18-20 minutes, or until the cheese balls are golden brown and crispy on the outside.
  7. Serve: Remove from the oven and let cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce such as ranch dressing, marinara, or a spicy aioli.

Notes

  • You can substitute cheddar cheese with a mix of mozzarella and cheddar for a different flavor and texture.
  • Ensure broccoli is well-drained after steaming to avoid soggy cheese balls.
  • For extra crispiness, use panko breadcrumbs instead of regular breadcrumbs.
  • These cheese balls can be frozen after shaping and baked directly from frozen with a few extra minutes added to the baking time.
  • Experiment with adding herbs like parsley or basil to enhance flavor.
  • Adjust seasoning with additional salt and pepper according to your taste.
